Loose Flowering Hornbeam
Carpinus laxiflora The most common trained in Japan is the Loose Flowering hornbeam. The new shoots are bright red appearing in spring and throughout the summer. Small long hanging flowers appear throught the spring and summer. They turn light brown in late summer and often persist throught the winter. Although often trained for forest style bonsai, they are also shaped in single and multiple trunk styles. The light grey bark has long distinctive stripes as it ages.
