Pinus thunbergii ‘Akame’

There are several different cultivars of Cork Bark Japanese black pines. This cultivar ‘Akame’ originated on Shikoku Island in Japan where pines are king. It is difficult to find in this country. As the bark thickens it does not fall off, but rather develops ridges which look like cork. This unique characteristic creates the focal point in the bonsai design. A young graft was obtained in 2003 and has been completely grown in different size bonsai containers. The graft union is excellent directly on the base of the surface roots. In fact, it is extremely difficult to detect where the graft union is. Well established in a Chinese bonsai container. Height 23”, width 27” and the trunk base is over 3”.
