Pseudocydonia sinensis
The Chinese Quince, “King of Fruiting Bonsai” is a distinctive species because of its pink flowers and large fruit during the summer. In autumn the fragrant fruit mature to a golden yellow and the foliage turns orange and red. Irregular patches of colorful bark peel away during the growing season which can be best appreciated in the winter. The one gallon size plants have many curves in the trunk and several branches for wiring and shaping. They develop great trunks quickly. This species has it all– flowers, fruit, bark and autumn color!

Pinus densiflora
Japanese red pine are excellent but difficult to find species for bonsai training. The bark forms thick sections which add the appearance of age quickly. The trunks are reddish as are the buds. The light green needles, thick bark and growth characteristics are different than Japanese black pine. Japanese red pine are delicate in appearance, but very easy to grow and are winter hardy. The 14-20 inch tall prebonsai
specimens offered here have been container grown to establish vigor and a fibrous root system. The 1- 1.5 inch trunks were given a basic shape several years ago, and now the branches need training. They are now ready for serious shaping and potting. Easy to grow and winter hardy!

Stewartia monadelpha
Dwarf Stewartia (a member of the Camellia family) are grown for bonsai because of the light-brown, cinnamon-colored bark, small white flowers, bright red autumn foliage and distinct long dormant vegetative buds. The fine twigs also make Dwarf Stewartia an excellent choice for miniature bonsai, forests and winter appreciation. This species is very difficult to find outside of Japan. A true rare find in the bonsai world!

Malus ‘Indian Magic’
Crabapple bonsai are an excellent addition to every bonsai collection for their prolific spring blossoms and bright autumn fruit. Crabapple ‘Indian Magic’ is a new cultivar which has dark red buds that open to single deep pink flowers. The summer foliage is generally purple and is followed by bright glossy red/orange fruit which persists all winter. These specimens have a shaped trunk and numerous branches which can be easily shaped to develop a fine bonsai. Ready to shape and pot, the one gallon pots are full of healthy and vigorous roots. Beautiful pink flowers in spring!

Magnolia ‘Ann’
The U.S.D.A. bred a special group of Magnolias for late spring bloom to prevent frost damage to the delicate flowers in spring. The deep purple, chalice-shaped flowers blanket the tree in late spring. Although the flowers are a bit large for smaller size bonsai, a few opening buds and a couple of flowers will make a magnificient display in your bonsai garden. The 6-12 inch tall Ann magnolias have been grown from cuttings in order to maintain the flowers and to develop a fibrous root system. The plants are lightly branched and will quickly grow and develop into an unusual flowering bonsai. Add an unusual flowering species to your collection!

Corylopsis pauciflora
The Buttercup winterhazel is a rare dwarf species with smaller flowers and leaves than the commonly grown Spike winterhazel which is much larger. Winterhazel bonsai are displayed just before they blossom with full fat yellow buds contrasting with the light brown smooth bark. Winterhazel bonsai are often trained into multiple trunk style bonsai. Small shohin bonsai can also be trained with the Buttercup winterhazel because of it’s delicate growth habit. The seedlings have a spreading growth habit and are well branched with fibrous root systems. A burst of spring joy!

Styrax japonicus
The Japanese Snowbell is grown for its lovely white bell shaped flowers which blossom in June. The hanging flowers are slightly fragrant at a time when other species have finished flowering. The bright green leaves present a refreshing feeling during the hot summer months. The silver colored bark is quite striking on older specimens. Japanese Snowbell form interesting oval fruit during the summer which ripen in August and persist through autumn. Seedlings are well branched and have some fibrous roots. They are suitable for most styles of single or multiple trunk bonsai. A rare find!

Carpinus coreana
The Korean Hornbeam is excellent for both forests and individual bonsai. The neat, small leaves turn a brilliant yellow-orange in autumn. The light colored bark contrasts with the buds during the winter dormant season. The Korean Hornbeam is a rare species, which is difficult to locate in commercial nurseries, especially in small sizes suitable for forests. These seedlings are superb and highly recommended for forest planting workshops. Seedlings are lightly branched and have some fibrous roots. Small well developed forest bonsai can be quickly created using these choice seedlings. One of the finest Hornbeam species for bonsai and forest plantings!

Acer palmatum
The Japanese maple is one of the most popular species trained for bonsai. The young new leaves have red edges when opening. During the summer small light green leaves provide a cool feeling, while autumn brings bright red and orange foliage. Japanese maples with green foliage tend to be more vigorous than those with colored or dissected foliage. The seedlings are unbranched whips with a superb fibrous root system. The slender trunks can be easily wired and shaped. A colorful addition to any bonsai collection!

Fagus sylvatica
Beech are beautiful deciduous species primarily grown for their white bark, long buds and fine twigs. The dark green leaves of European beech turn bright yellow in autumn. Bronze leaves often persist through the winter adding additional interest. Forest bonsai are commonly created with Beech because they are easy to grow and the white bark contrasts beautifully with the dark green leaves and moss. The lightly branched seedlings have a few fibrous roots. A dramatic and classic choice!
